This is electrical equipment that is connected full time and consumes electricity full time. Items in this category include items with remote controls, items with clock displays, computer peripheral equipment, computers, stereo equipment etc. Televisions can have a standby load of 1 to 70 watts. Try to find the standby load of a device before purchase. The number of devices in a household with standby power consumption can contribute to your electrical bill as follows:

Methods to combat standby loads include:

  • Switch off device at the wall
  • Have a computer controlled USB Powerboard for computer peripherals (peripherals turn on only with computer)
  • Have a master slave Powerboard for television and its peripheral equipment (peripherals turn on once load is sensed on master power point)
  • Have a remote control Powerboard where access to power points is difficult (control up to 4 power points individually with remote control)
  • Use a timer to control hours of operation

 

The future

 

The Australian Government announced that electrical appliances sold after 2012 will need to have a standby power consumption of 1 watt or less (other countries are looking at similar goals). Some electronic devices such as computer TFT screens and laptops already meet this standard. The use of switched mode power supplies and a new range of power control silicon chips will help address this requirement. Standard power supply sizes are available now that meet the 1 watt standby.
