Driving for Fuel Efficiency

- Stop start engine automatic control. Engine stops when car stops. Engine starts when you want to resume. Volkswagen and BMW use this technology.
- Some of the smaller diesel engines can have the same fuel economy as a hybrid especially in highway driving.
- Smart alternators that only engage when car is braking. GM and BMW use this technology.
- Multi-port fuel injection. Each cylinder has its own injector better controlling fuel air mix.
- Variable value technology. This improves efficiency across the engine speed range better.
Future Fuel Energy Efficiency
- Smart Fortwo is in trails with and electric version of thier car. The trial involves 1000 vehicles.
- Mini E is in trials with an electric version of thier car.
- Think City electric car can be produced at over 5000 vehicles per year.
- Mitsubishi eMiev is in production of thier electric car since July 2009. This car is being produced in the thousands.
- Tesla Roadster electric vehicle pictured below is being produced in thier 100s.
- Vectrix make an electric scooter with 100kmh (62 mph) speed limit, 87 km (54 m) range and 3.7 kWh of battery storage (less than $1 to charge).
- Plug In Hybrid allow external charging of the batteries to allow electric driving initially. This suits shorter city commuting.
- Robots can replace batteries from under certain cars in less than 3 minutes. This could allow quick electric car range extension. The batteries could be recharged on off peak power.
- Electricity may come from coal or gas power stations today but may use renewable energy more in the coming decades.
